Pearls shall never die. We feel there is no better time to talk about them than in June; after all the pearl is June's gemstone. Pearls are a timeless gem fetched and retrieved for over centuries, to be worn by some of the highest people in stature throughout history. Pearls are coming back in a big way, and though they have been a mark of virtuous femininity for decades, they are now being reclaimed and worn in a non-binary way.
A miraculous creation of nature, the natural pearl can be created by the result of damage coming from outside influences, leaving the mollusk to create a pearl. How beautiful is it, that the pearl is claimed to be tears of the Gods. From 1000 BC, pearls have been excavated from the Arabian Gulf and traded to the highest noblemen in earlier times throughout Europe and China. Many myths and Legends have since surrounded the pearl, claiming to bring purity and good luck. The creation of the pearl is linked to the birth of Aphrodite-the goddess of love and beauty, which brought the gem to symbolize ultimate femininity.
Over here at Filthy Rebena, we celebrate self expression, and a great way to express one's self is through jewelry. You can find many fresh water pearl pieces that are hand crafted by amazing Canadian artisans at both shops. We urge you to pick out that piece that brings you love and joy in your chosen style!

]]>As we dove deep into the world of candle waxes, we never realized the complexities that existed surrounding ethics and sourcing. We learned a lot, and we want to share.
]]>It seems like everyone is making candles these days, which we are not complaining about. We are just concerned that within this fast paced world, health and the environment are taken into consideration when these candles are being made. Main question; What is in our wax?
One of our favourite candle brands is Portland based company Trollkat & Haxan. They sent some amazing candle resource info our way lately and we have been wanting to share it; so here it is!
From Trollkat;
As we dove deep into the world of candle waxes, we never realized the complexities that existed surrounding ethics and sourcing. We learned a lot, and we want to share.
The Bad
- Soy wax is made from soybean oil, using a process similar to that used to create paraffin wax, a petroleum based product. This is also similar to the process used to create coconut wax. The oil is refined, hydrogenated - that's what makes liquid oil hard at room temperature.
- All existing plant based waxes rely on industrial farming. Currently there are no plant based waxes that do not threaten native plant diversity, contribute to climate change, deforestation, pushing native populations out of their land, and loss of habitats for wildlife.
- Industrially processed beeswax, found in craft stores, bulk maker websites, and through major wholesale distributors, contains paraffin. Paraffin is a petroleum based product.
Unless a candle brand is buying directly from beekeeper or distributors with transparent sourcing, it must be assumed that it has been chemically deodorized, likely bleached, and contains at least .5% paraffin, which is used in order to make the candles more aesthetically pleasing. Even products that say “100% Beeswax” are NOT 100% Beeswax. We found no major brands with transparent sourcing, and very few boutique brands who could identify their sourcing.
- The industrial beekeeping industry hurts both native bee populations and small beekeepers. They drive down the prices of honey and wax, making it impossible for beekeepers to compete, and establish more hives their local ecosystems can support - just like agriculture, it is always more ethical to source from small honey and wax producers.
So, you can see what we were up against. But don't fret - not all is lost. It is not impossible to find an ethically made candle, and Needfire has dedicated a lot of time and energy to answering the question - how can I buy candles that align with my ethics as a consumer?
The Good
- There are many domestic and international beekeepers that can be supported. We buy our wax exclusively from small producers - they range from small farms, mobile pollinator services, and small companies that help apiaries process their honey, and sell the leftover wax for them.
- Beeswax does NOT need to be heavily processed. Pure beeswax has almost an indefinite shelf life. Thousands of year old beeswax has been found, tested, and proven to be nearly identical with freshly produced beeswax.
- We have a massively long relationship, as a species, with beeswax. And that means, the best way to process beeswax is also the easiest way - we process all of our gold beeswax in house, by simply straining it through a fine cloth. All of our white beeswax is processed by our suppliers, with no added chemicals or other waxes.
- When ethically sourced, beeswax helps in an effort to save the environment. There is no argument, native populations of bees are better pollinators than domesticated honey bees. Ideally, more pollinator friendly wildflowers should be planted, fewer pesticides used, and the public is educated on their local pollinator population so that these native species can survive. Regardless, we still need a pollinator population. The Western Honeybee is imperfect, an import from Europe, but an important stopgap while we continue to fight for the earth's resources to be properly managed.
- Beeswax candles clean the air. They naturally ionize the air, pulling toxins from it. No other wax does this.
- Trollkatt has committed to perfecting our sourcing. In our modern world, there is no such thing as perfectly ethical sourcing. However, there are ways to keep improving. We are in the process of working with more farms, particularly in Europe where Western Honeybee populations are native, to continue to reduce the environmental impact of our candles.
- We are giving back. We believe in supporting native bee populations FIRST. We will be fundraising for The Bee Conservancy, a non-profit organized as a response to the current bee crisis.
Join us in our efforts for a more ethical candle industry! We hope you are inspired to find ways in your own community to save native bee populations :)

Even though I am not a photographer that deals with film, I am a nostalgic person for 'tangible' things and the closing of the last film developer in London really made me sad. Whenever I am on the hunt for products, I will always grab old photos... there is something so magical about them even though the people are strangers, there is still a familiarity in the moment of that snap. The present moment being frozen forever.
When Avan Patel, a London Film photographer, contacted our store to talk about his new film developing venture, we were super excited to hear all about it and see his new space.
Film Dev London studio is located on Hamilton Road in an old car garage and boy is it beautiful!! The studio space is out of this world, they have a hair salon inside, and of course a film developing space is carved out in the back corner.
Avan used to work for Henry's where he would see people drop off film all the time. They would have to wait over a month to get it developed because Henry's ships it to Quebec. Avan realized that this was a service that London needed back desperately, and Hallelujah, he made that happen!
Why we are writing about this, besides our excitement of film developing being back in London, is because we have partnered up with Avan to be a drop off spot for film photographers. Hamilton rd can be tricky to go to, so we are making it easier for all of you with film drop offs at both our store locations;
177 Dundas St. & 144 Wortley Rd.
All you need to do is bring your film and our sales associates will help you with the rest. Payment is made by etransfer to Avan who will contact you once he grabs your film from the shops. This turn around is no longer than a week.
We are always super excited to see new business ventures start in London, especially when they involve creatives.
Check out Avan's photography page @avanpatel_ or website avanpatel.com
and his newest film developing venture @film.dev.ldn or website allthingsfilm.ca
In the meantime here are some shots of where the magic happens;
]]>To be feminine has become such a narrow slot to fit into based on patriarchal labels and stereotypes that it is no longer being tolerated and has been pushed into a whole new realm.
]]>Pictured above: Young toothless Dani with my bro and my favourite T-shirt.
This is a memory I can always vividly
remember. If you were to look back at my
family photographs as we spend many a
summer at our family cottage the camera
would capture an eight-year old girl with
straggly sun kissed brown hair, skinned
knees, a huge smile with two front teeth
missing and above all-my brothers hand me
downs of jean shorts and a batman T-shirt.
This was my uniform through life for many
years my brother’s T-shirts and too long
denim cargos, and I loved it. Mind you, I
didn’t feel any different about what I wore
back then nor do I now. I’ve been what they
may call a “tom boy” my whole life as I
think many girls are. You don’t think about
what you wear because half the time you’re
too busy getting messy with some
grasshoppers and lake water. There came a
point in my life however, when the
institutional labels and stereotypes of
“female” came creeping up on me. What
does it mean to look feminine? If I don’t
wear heels and dresses with long pin
straight hair will the ninth-grade boys still
like me?
Pictured above: My bro and I fishing ready on Little Straggle
Let’s get something straight, to be
feminine has become such a narrow slot to
fit into based on patriarchal labels and
stereotypes that it is no longer being
tolerated and has been pushed into a whole
new realm, and celebrated. My experience
and journey to get to that point is still a
work in progress, but I can speak on one of
the most freeing influences I’ve had, my
clothes. Fashion is such a powerful tool for
us to become whoever we want to be but
even better, our truest self. To find myself
and my style is something I can hold so
close to me with confidence and stability.
For a long time, I would follow many
trends (as I’m sure we are all guilty of)
trying to find what sticks and what
represents me best. It wasn’t until I stopped
to think what clothes actually made me feel
my best that my attitude towards fashion
started to change. Clothes are a tool we all
can tap into to unlock our best potential. To
be feminine is such a broad term and
should truly only have one definition-
power. To feel powerful and confident in
one’s self should make anyone feel like the
woman they are.
Pictured above: Algonquin Park Summer 2020 Me and my adventure buddy, Bo
My senior prom, a night to remember…I
actually can’t remember if that was the
prom committees theme choice to splatter
in the banquet hall but I hated every second
of it. It was a last-minute struggle to find a
prom dress, nothing seemed to work and I
ended up ordering a dress online last
minute. Poof…white…pink…lace. Anyone
who knows me now, knows I would never (I
cannot stress enough) ever wear something
like that. I felt so uncomfortable the whole
night. I didn’t worry about taking too many
pictures and I was just ready to get out of
there. Above all I didn’t feel beautiful, this
was something I chose to wear because I
thought it would make me look and feel
feminine on a night that is weighted as ‘the
most important night of your high school
existence’. If I could do it all over again I
would or maybe just as best to stay home.
I look back now and cringe at my
obviously horrendous fashion choices.
We’ve all been there mind you, and you’ll
never find yourself without making a few
mistakes along the way (red fedoras and
all.) If this article means anything, after all
the trial and errors, I will still always be that
eight-year old girl with her crocs and holey
T-shirts. It’s important to carry parts of
yourself with you as you emerge into who
you want to be presently. To be feminine is
to be in your power, and to externally show
that you need clothes that make you feel
genuine and radiate self-love. Filthy Rebena
is a place that I am happy to say, celebrates
those qualities every day. Remember those
hand-me downs I mentioned? Thanks to
establishments like Filthy Rebena, that type
of life style choice can be perpetuated
through ethically sourced clothing so you
can feel good about the clothes you’re
wearing. Now get out there and claim your
feminine power!

]]>Nike is an iconic brand best known for its shoes. Since the 1940s, they have been the driving force behind sneaker culture. Is this company as stinky as a soiled pair of sneakers...
]]>1. Nike’s Slogan: Inspired by a Murderer
Nike’s slogan, “Just Do It”, has a sinister story behind it. The slogan was inspired by Utah criminal Gary Gilmore in the 1970s. After committing a double murder, he faced execution by firing squad. In his final moments, he said, “Let’s do it.” Later, Nike hired advertising agency Wieden and Kennedy to help them with selling shoes. The agency found inspiration in Gilmore’s last words. They adapted his phrase to, “Just Do It” and used it as Nike’s new slogan in a 1988 TV ad. It was a major hit!
2. The Great Shoe Spill of 1990
The Hansa Carrier, a container ship, accidentally lost a large amount of Nike sneakers while at sea in May, 1990. The ship sailed into a storm, and 21 cargo containers fell into the Pacific ocean - some of which contained Nike Air Jordans. It’s estimated that over 60,000 sneakers were lost in the accident. Months later, the shoes started washing ashore in North America!
3. Beatles Lawsuit Against Nike
Nike’s 1987 Air Revolution TV ad was a source of controversy. The black and white ad featured athletes doing their thing, with the song Revolution by the Beatles playing in the background. The Beatles and their record company, Apple Records, were not happy about their song being used without permission. They launched a lawsuit against the brand for $15 million dollars. Nike stopped the ad from running and ended up settling the case out-of-court, but it’s a complete mystery as to what the terms were.
4. The Story of the Swoosh Logo
Nike’s logo was designed in 1971 by graphic designer Carolyn Davidson. At the time, Davidson was a student in college looking for extra money. She created the highly recognizable Swoosh logo and was paid $35 for it. In 1983, after the brand had grown, she was invited to a special event where she was recognized as the logo’s creator by Nike executives. She was given a diamond swoosh ring and 500 shares of the brand’s stock as a present.
5. Nike and Adidas Competed for Michael Jordan
When Michael Jordan started playing in the NBA at the ripe young age of 21, he had a decision to make. He could either partner with Nike, or rival shoe-maker Adidas. He loved to wear Adidas, so he was leaning towards picking them. However, his parents urged him to take up Nike’s offer of $500,000 a year for five years, two Mercedes cars, and custom shoes. Jordan listened and took the deal. This is how Nike’s Air Jordans line was born.
6. Nike’s Sustainability Initiative - Reuse a Shoe Program
In the 1990s, Nike aimed to lessen its environmental impact. Employee Steve Potter had the great idea of upcycling old shoes into reusable material to help accomplish this goal. This led to the birth of their sustainability program, Reuse-A-Shoe. The program collects Nike shoes from consumers and transforms them into a new material called Nike Grind. The material is used to help build Nike stores and products. So far, 28 million shoes have been collected!

The road to fashion for founder Giorgio Armani wasn’t straight. First, he spent time in school for medicine. Then, he enrolled in the military. Eventually he decided to look for a new career path again. He moved over to the fashion industry and started as a window dresser, before working his way up to create Armani.
2. Caused social change from power dressing
Armani was responsible for driving the fashion trend of power dressing. Power dressing played a major role in building a new type of working women in society in the 80s. These women felt empowered to establish their authority in the workplace with the help of power suits. Many moved into high powered job positions, which up until then had been historically held by men.
3. Reinvented bomber jackets
Bomber jackets were first used in WW1. Fighter pilots wore them to stay warm because their cockpits were not enclosed. Later, they were popularized by Armani. In 1970, the label released a line of modified bomber jackets that presented them as a fashion item, and it caught on.
4. Impacted the red carpet
Armani’s impact on red carpet dressing is undeniable. In the 80s, the typical red carpet look was in need of an upgrade. Celebrities were itching for something more modern, and that’s exactly what Armani provided at the time. The label started outfitting them and soon everyone was wearing Armani to the red carpet. So many celebrities wore the label to the 1990 Oscars that they were called “The Armani Awards.”
5. Armani is fur free
The label no longer uses fur. Armani phased fur out of its products starting in 2016. They said it was because they now have technological alternatives that make the use of animals in their fashion products completely unnecessary.

1. Used as war motorcycles
In WW1, the United States military fought against Mexican revolutionaries. They brought Harley-Davidson sidecar motorcycles with mounted machine guns to the fight. This was the first time sidecar motorcycles had been used in this way. Prior to that they were mostly being used just for transportation.
2. Pig mascot
After WW1, motorcycle racing was becoming a new, popular sport. Unsurprisingly, Harley-Davidson was eager to compete. They had a racing team in the 1920s called the Wrecking Crew, and a pig named Johnny was the mascot. Riding victory laps with the pig sitting on the winning bike’s gas tank became a tradition for the team.
3. Easy Rider
In the iconic 1969 film Easy Rider, Harley-Davidson motorcycles were used. The “Captain America” Harley-Davidson bike seen in the movie fetched $1.3 million dollars at an auction. This made it one of the most expensive choppers ever sold!
4. Evil Knievel’s big jump
The most famous stuntman in the world - Evil Knievel - broke the world record for the longest jump on a Harley. He jumped over 14 Greyhound buses on a Harley XR-750 - a distance of over 130 feet.

Ready to learn more? Read on for 6 Wrangler facts.
1. How Wranglers started
In 1904, C.C. Hudson quit his factory job and created the Blue Bell Overall Company. The company started out by making overalls for railroad workers. By 1943, things were going well for Blue Bell. They purchased a company named Casey Jones Work Clothes. With the purchase came rights to Casey Jones’ unknown brand name at the time, Wrangler.
2. Made for cowboys
A designer named Bernard Lichtenstein was hired to design the jeans under the Wrangler brand. Also known as Rodeo Ben, this famous Polish tailor helped Wrangler design a new pair of jeans specifically for cowboys.
3. Innovating jeans
The new Wrangler jean design had a ton of innovations. For example, it featured a slimmer, more proportioned fit with a longer rise. This allowed for more flexibility. Cowboys could now easily twist and bend themselves above the waist. The new design was an immediate hit, and became a trusty wardrobe staple for cowboys everywhere.
4. Wrangler and the rodeo
Since Wrangler jeans were made for cowboys, naturally the brand developed a very close relationship to the rodeo. In 1974, Wrangler was endorsed by the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association of America (PRCA). Famous cowboys like Jim Shoulder started wearing the jeans during the rodeo, making the brand even more well known.
5. Wrangler Jean Machine
In the 80s, Wrangler was a sponsor of superstar racecar driver Dale Earnhardt, who competed in NASCAR. Earnhardt drove a blue and yellow racing car called the “Wrangler Jean Machine.” That year, he won the first three of his seven NASCAR championships.
5. Sustainability initiatives
Wrangler cares about the planet. They want to reduce their footprint on Earth, and have set some ambitious sustainability goals for its denim! Their jeans are made from cotton, and they are aiming to grow 100% of the cotton using sustainable practices by 2025. So yes Wrangler is still kicking... and remember, the W is silent ;)

]]>1. Beginning from a broken ankle
In 1945, German army doctor Klaus Maertens broke his ankle while skiing in Germany. His standard army boots were too uncomfortable to wear with the injury, so he started looking for alternatives. This led him to inventing the first Doc Martens boot with an air-cushioned sole.
2. Doc Martens has working class roots
The boots got their start in the English working class because they were so comfortable. This made them the perfect workwear for postal workers, factory workers, and police officers, or anyone else who was on their feet all day. And the fact they were durable didn’t hurt either!
3. They became a symbol of rebellion
Later, Doc Martens boots started being adopted by emerging subcultures as part of their identity. In the 70s, it was the punks. In the 80s, it was the new-wave artists. And in the 90s, it was the grunge movement. This has caused the boots to become a symbol of rebellion, and also pride.
The Who’s Pete Townsend took the boots mainstream by wearing them on stage in the 60s. His high energy performances were super physical. He would jump around a lot and this damaged his feet. In 1967, he was inspired by his working class roots. He wore Docs on-stage to pay homage to his roots while protecting his soles. After this, the attention on the brand became bigger than ever before.
5. 54-inch tall Docs
Elton John played the Pinball Wizard in Ken Russell's 1975 musical film "Tommy." The first thing that grabs your attention when you see his character? The 54 inch tall Docs he walks on. They were specially designed for his character. It’s a funny sight to see. These special boots are now on display at Northampton Museum in England.
Doc Martens is making a difference in the clothing industry with sustainability initiatives. For example, they are a champion for animal rights. Leather has been one of the main ingredients in Dr. Martens recipe for decades. Now the company has introduced a vegan line of footwear. This line reduces their leather usage and improves the treatment of animals.

1. Levi's invented the blue jean
Blue jeans were born on May 20, 1873. On that day, Levi's founder Levi Strauss and tailor Jacob Davis obtained a patent to put rivets in men's work pants. Denim pants had already been around for years, but it was the act of placing rivets in these traditional pants that created what we now call jeans.
2. The old name was waist overalls
"Waist overalls" is the name that preceded jeans. It was the first term given to Levi's jeans in 1873. The pants continued to be known as waist overalls until the '60s, when the term “jeans” was adopted.
The company collected 18,850 donated pairs of Levi's to create a message about recycling on the San Francisco 49ers football field. Afterward, the jeans were donated to Goodwill where their sales benefited their job training programs.
4. Canadian tuxedo origin
The origin of the Canadian tuxedo came from an incident in 1951 at an upscale hotel in Vancouver, Canada. Star Bing Crosby was initially denied entrance to the hotel for wearing Levi’s denim jeans. The staff thought he looked like a bum. Levi’s found out and presented him with a denim tuxedo jacket, so no one could ever say he was too dressed down ever again.
5. Humorous vintage flyers
Company flyers created during Levi’s lifetime depict him with his trademark beard, a staple look during his younger years. The vintage flyers depict him in funny situations. In one, Levi scrambles over a fence as a dog pulls on his denim overalls.
6. Levi's bell bottoms
In the 60s and 70s, bell bottoms, pants with legs that become wider below the knee were going mainstream. Then Levi's came out with their own bell bottoms and they were an instant hit. The jeans served as a symbol of political expression, musical preference and personal style. During this time, wearers adorned them with patches, paint or colourful designs.
7. Environmental initiatives
This brand is making a difference in the clothing industry with a variety of environmental initiatives. For example, they found a new way to create the same denim while reducing water. Just by doing this, they’ve saved 4.2 billion litres of water since 2011. In our humble opinion it is still MUCH better on the environment to buy second hand denim and who doesn't want BUTTER SOFT jeans!?

The company was founded by Adolf "Adi" Dassler who made sports shoes in his mother's scullery or laundry room in Herzogenaurach, Germany after his return from World War I. Adidas is an iconic sportswear brand with a rich history dating back to the 1924. Another reason why we love the roaring 20s! We love this brand for its sneakers and apparel. More fun facts about Adidas below;
1. Adidas Park tree
There was a place in Boston, Massachusetts called Adidas Park. If you walked by the park wearing anything but Adidas sneakers, your sneakers would be taken by a local and thrown in a tree. The tree was full of Nikes and Puma sneakers.
2. Hip Hop’s first endorsement deal was between Run-D.M.C. and Adidas
Run-D.M.C. signed a massive deal with Adidas in the 1980s after endorsing the brand in songs like “My Adidas”. This was the very first endorsement deal in hip hop history and laid the groundwork for future endorsement deals between brands and artists.
5. Giant Adidas shoes at Adidas Village
In Portland, Oregon, there are two giant Superstar Adidas shoes on display. The shoes are 15 feet long and are part of the "Left Right Project". Artists from the east and west coast each painted one of the shoes, and they have been installed at Adidas Village in Portland.

Mainstream cotton crops produce the third highest pesticide use in America. According to the World Health Organization up to 20,000 deaths each year are caused by pesticide poisoning in developing countries. Gross.
]]>The thought, when it looks good, it should be worn should be a simple thought. A thought that doesn't have us wondering about if it is also sustainably made. Shouldn't everything be sustainably made?? Hopefully the power of the consumer will make this happen sooner rather than later. To have this power we need knowledge. Knowledge of key sourcing and manufacturing points to look for. In this instance we are looking at the benefits of organic cotton.
Cotton is one of the oldest plant-to-fabric crops in the world and is the most produced fabric on the planet today. The widespread use of cotton stemmed from its easy transition from plant to fabric – it needs no processing or chemicals, and can go from the stem to a spinning wheel. Cotton being mainly made of cellulose, is ideal for our skin to breathe, and it is naturally absorbent. It is incredibly versatile and has been used throughout history for all the classic pieces; jeans, t-shirts, towels, tents, and even coffee filters, to name a few.
Unfortunately, mainstream cotton crops produce the third highest pesticide use in America, after soy and corn. Pesticide poisoning is happening all over the world from cash crops such as Cotton. According to the World Health Organization up to 20,000 deaths each year are caused by pesticide poisoning in developing countries. Gross. Cotton is also a very thirsty crop. It takes over 2,700 litres of water to make a t-shirt, and 11,000 litres of water to make a pair of jeans. This is insane when you stop and think about it. Montsanto's GMO cotton crops are taking over as well. They were suppose to enable farmers to not use pesticides but this has not been the case.
This is why we all need to turn to organic cotton, and here are more great reasons why;
Reduces environmental footprint.
Organic cotton is pesticide free! What a shocker, we don't actually need all that pesticide or GMO'd seeds. See ya later Montsanto! No toxic chemicals are used in the growing of organic cotton. It doesn’t damage the soil, has less impact on the air and uses 88% less water and 62% less energy. Organic gardening relies more on grey water, and water recycling. This saves our planet!
Promotes safe work & better livlihood.
Growing organic cotton keeps farmers and their families safe. They are not exposed to toxic chemicals in the field or through their food and water supply. It also means farmers grow more than one crop which supplements their food and income.
Impacts our food system.
Organic cotton is grown from organic cotton seeds. Cotton seed oil is used in a variety of food products such as cookies, chips and vegetable oil, and is also fed to livestock. So while cotton fiber is not something we put in our body, the by-product can make its way into our diets.
By choosing organic over conventional cotton you have the purchasing power to influence brands, manufacturers and even farmers. The more we purchase organic cotton, the more available it will become, eventually making it more affordable for everyone.
It’s time for a change; to thrive in the future we need to repair the fashion industry. Choosing organic cotton is a step in the right direction when buying new.
Sincerely
-JC

Frank and Oak – Canadian-designed minimalist fashion, ethically & *some* locally made. For men and women.

]]>You’re about to learn about Coogi, a high quality Australian fashion brand that became one of the most famous streetwear names around.
Coogi is an Australian fashion brand best known for its knitted sweaters with unconventional patterns. In addition to clothing, they also carry cosmetics, toiletries, leather goods, furniture, textiles and toys. Its current headquarters are located in New York in the United States.
The famous Coogi sweater pattern is made up of 3 signature elements:
1. Asymmetrical wave shapes
2. A variety of textures
3. Bright colours
These 3 elements give Coogi its energetic vibrancy. They are meant to convey the rich and exotic Australian landscape and culture.
1. The brand's original name, Cuggi, is taken from a fountain on the tiny island of Alacoueli in the Adriatic Sea. Jacky Taranto's father emigrated from there to Australia in the 1930s.
2. Egyptian designer Hazem Elsheltawi is the original creator of the unique Coogi fabrics. He has also done work for the Common Wealth Games and Oprah Winfrey. Talk about swanky!
3. The Coogi pattern was honored for its craftmanship by being inducted into Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt, a museum dedicated to the collection of historic and contemporary design.
4. The brand is mistakenly called the Cosby sweater though Cosby never wore Coogi sweaters. The costume designer on the Cosby show thought Coogi sweaters were too bright and gaudy for Dr. Huxtable.
5. The Brooklyn Nets are in trouble with Coogi. Their 2018-19 "City" edition jerseys were inspired by Coogi and pay tribute to Biggie. Coogie is now suing the Nets for using their brand and incorporating it into the jerseys without permission.
6. Coogi founder, Jacky Taranto died in a car accident in March of 2007. She was in Queensland Australia when this happened.
1969 - The brand is founded by Jacky Taranto in Melbourne, Australia as Cuggi.
1987 - The brand renames itself from Cuggi to Coogi, to closer resemble an Indigenous Australian name, and to avoid infringement of USA clothing trademarks.
1994 - Biggie Smalls propels Coogi to fame in urban culture. He name drops the brand in hits like "Big Poppa" and "One More Chance", which skyrockets Coogi’s popularity.
2002 - Coogi declines in popularity. Jacky Tarantino sells the brand to US investors Norman Weisfeld, Bruce Weisfeld and Jimmy Khezri for 25 million dollars. The Coogi name is licensed to various discount manufacturers who don't uphold the apparel quality, diluting the brand's luxury appeal.
2014 - Coogi experiences a resurgence in popularity due to the 90s comeback. The brand relaunches with a focus on men's sweaters.

Her handmade goods embody the natural world in both form and function, using sustainable practices and natural fibers, dyes, and inks and a focus on simplicity and attention to detail. Elana’s goods invite mindful interaction with nature both in the home and in the wild, and encourage care for the world around you.
Below is a small selection of our personal favorites to wet your whistle on what you can find in store. We are carrying large, 11" x 14" prints. We love a good snake print. It's called: Garden Variety.
We are also carrying a good amount of Elana's 8" x 10" prints. Marsh Birds is one of our favorites below because it reminds us watching the cranes fish in the Thames right here in London, Ontario. (PS, anyone else catch the albino duck in the Thames this year?!)
We haven't forgot about our snail-mail enthusiasts as we are carrying a wide selection of Elana's notecards and boy-oh-boy are they beautiful! It's hard to choose a favorite but this card called Kelp is just perfect. What better than pastel-brown mountains, jazzy kelp and a dose of sunshine.
We hope you enjoyed this lil' preview of the latest paper goods in the shop. Please let us know your favorite in the comments below!
]]>Farmers markets are a great opportunity to reconnect us with our food system. Shopping at your local farmers’ market is a healthy decision not only for you, but for your community’s economy as well!
]]>The Ilderton Village is located just 7 minutes north of London. With local farmers selling their meats, cheeses and produce, you'll find an array of fresh foods - some picked that morning! What's first on our Ilderton Market bucket list? To fill that bucket with wine! The Ilderton Market has the largest selection of artisan wine vendors from Lake Huron's shores (yes, there are wine tastings!) and teas if you're more of a straight edge type. Vendor Ceylon Select Teas has teas to boost your immunity, liven your mood and make you feel like you've found the fountain of youth! The teas are made by a local nutritionist and Master Tea Sommelier. Enjoy a fresh taco from the Black Sombrero that is made with "Canada's Best Guacamole" (as voted byJohn Catucci of the Food Network's "You Gotta Eat Here!"). You'll also find a wide assortment of baked goods, jams & Preserves, fresh-cut flowers, handmade soaps & artisan wares.
Filthy's Favorite: Pumpkin Fritters from The Fritter Shop
The Masonville Farmers’ Market has evolved into a local community hub with over 40 farmers, artisans and food producers. This market is organized by the farmers and artisans that bring us the Western Fair Market so you can be sure to find interesting foods, seasonal items and a lot of vendor hustle, bustle and camaraderie! One of our first stops is always: The Fritter Shop as they carry THE BEST vegan seasonal fritters.
We also love swooning over The Wandering Bee's booth. She always has beautiful fresh cut flower bouquets from her farm along with alpaca yarn. Yup, ya heard us... A flower farmer AND alpaca farmer! SWOON. (PS: I would love to be gifted a box of fritters or an alpaca if anyone out there is reading this... 👋) Also wanted to mention that since this market is basically in the Masonville Mall parking lot, there is plenty of free parking.
Open: Saturdays, 8AM – 3PM
Location: The Western Fair District, 900 King Street
Number of Vendors: 100
Filthy's Favorite: "GO AWAY" Crewnecks from Soft Flirt
Welcome to the MOTHER of all Markets! It's a vibrant gathering place in the heart of Old East Village bringing together community, food and local artisans. There are two levels of 100 vendors that truly offer their own unique products. Make sure you walk the whole place and take your time poking around. Upstairs we love visiting the rug vendor, our homegirl t-shirt maker Soft Flirt and looking at the vintage furniture booth as they have great mid-century pieces. Downstairs, it's all about following your nose my friends. SO MANY FOOD VENDORS - you're in for a TREAT. If you're still hungry when you leave, fret not, there is always a brigade of Food Truck vendors outside. Oh! And don't forget to bring your knives to be sharpened at RW Sharpening + Repair while you eat!
Everything we sampled, purchased or viewed was of high quality and all the vendors were eager to provide samples, have a chat and were not pushing their products in a forceful manner. They were simply giving a little background information on their livelihood and showing a tremendous amount of pride in the London region and the products they were capable of producing. It's something that is lacking in some towns and cities in Ontario and is almost a requirement to build a sense of community.
Filthy would highly recommend anyone visiting or living in the London area to take a couple of hours on a Saturday and visit this highly reputable farmers market.

The creator of Drop Dead Candles, Mel is from Oshawa Ontario and has been creating these zainy candles for quite awhile now. We first met Mel at a Punk Rock Flea, awe the good ol' days! Where Mel bought an awesome denim rucksack from us (yes she knows what is good!).
Needless to say her candles seemed to sell out in seconds, before we could even get our hot paws on one!! I was broken hearted when I couldn't snag one of her lady candles. But alas we now have a whole crew of lady candles in the shop, along with some cats, spines, skulls, and black hearts.... wanting to get next her awesome palmistry hands, and curious, should we get the flaming dicks? hmmmm....
A very cool note to add, Mel makes all her own moulds from found objects usually thrifted. Nothing we love more than a fellow thrifter and tbh a true maker!
