Extinct is forever. What a scary thought when thinking that The original 80s mullet is endangered.

Although we have been seeing new renditions of the mullet on Rihanna for example. What a sexy gal, but that got me thinking; seeing an original mullet used to be an easy task. You could probably witness one on the street every other day. Worn by the people that knew what they loved and were sticking with it. No need to adapt to anything new. They knew they liked their parties in the back and business in the front and that’s the way it will be until that beast turns into a skullet. (A whole other breed to dive into on another day.) This mullet was them finding themselves. Identifying to their true badass self, and who really wants to let that go. I definitely would not. I feel that I know exactly what I like and will stick with it. There is no need to keep up with the trends if you feel like you are the ultimate rockstar in what you are rocking. Why search for anything else. It is almost a liberating feeling.

And that is why I am concerned that the original mullet is endangered.

Although I am speaking of the 80s classic mullet here is a fun fact as well:

Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1884) Perhaps the reasons for Colderidge growing a mullet can be attributed to his opium addiction and possibly his difficult marriage. One rather interesting but somewhat ironic fact about Colderidge is that he can be credited for introducing the word ‘aesthetic’ to the English language. This guy was onto things early on in the game.

As aesthetically pleasing as the mullet is, it really is quite a practical cut if you are wanting to keep some length. From from flyaways in the front.

In the 1960s and 70s the mullet slowly grew in popularity, but it wasn’t until the 1980s that the mullet became mainstream. The origin of this 1980s mullet craze came from the southern US states, spreading rapidly through the rest of the US and across into Europe and South America. During this time in the 1980s and early 1990s the mullet was the staple haircut for footballers, pop stars, and TV stars. Somehow the mullet took a dark turn towards the white trash rockstar, and ironically today if you have a mullet your chances of landing a decent job are slim, it was actually seen as a good thing to have a mullet when applying for jobs.

But not to fear, Rihanna is bringing them back…. although the original forefathers may be pretty much extinct, it will be interesting to see what heads this hairdo lands on next.
