We are super stoked to have been interviewed by Streets of Canada. Be sure to check out all of the amazing Canadian dreamers, creators and entrepreneurs on their website.
“I grew up in a very political family in Wisconsin, with a passionate family that protested for their beliefs. At the time, George W. Bush was in office and I remember the day on the picket line my grandfather told me to ‘get out of this hell-forsaken country’. They were the bleeding heart type. We lived in a small town and I wasn’t exposed to very much. When I came to Canada, the culture shock was unbelievable. Everyone was so relaxed and easy-going. People could express themselves freely; it was cool to let your freak flag fly and be whoever you wanted to be. It took a long time to get used to, but I embraced student life; counting pennies and saving cash by doing my laundry in the bathtub. After college, I worked as a wardrobe stylist at a vintage clothing company, where I met Natalie Bradshaw. When we experienced a mass layoff, Natalie had the idea to sell off our very own wardrobes. I had my doubts, but sure enough, she was right. People wanted to buy our clothes! We saw an opportunity and opened Filthy Rebena Vintage because we love vintage fashion and sustainability. I remember when my father bought me a used bicycle, he said ‘you take care of this bike and it will take care of you forever’. We didn’t throw things away because they were used or broken, we’d say ‘add love and it will give you tenfold back’. It’s the same with everything! If we keep taking, we’ll run out eventually. That’s why sustainability is so important. We can all make a difference, and it starts with how you think. We want to put good vibes out there and we believe in manifesting our own reality. Before important events, Natalie and I have a bathtub ritual. The night before we’ll both be in our homes, relaxed in our bathtubs, manifesting the outcome we want for the next day. It’s funny, we will compare rituals the next morning and sometimes our thoughts are identical with a matching outcome! The point is that you have control of your reality and when you put good vibes out there, just like when you add a little love to vintage goods, it comes back tenfold.”
